If my memory is right Dee Dee writes something similar in his book "Poison heart": Johnny wanted to borrow Dee Dee's jacket, Dee Dee wouldn't lend it out, then the jacket disappears and Dee Dee finds it in Johnny's suitcase, Dee Dee gets mad and slashes the rest of the clothes in Johnny's suitcase with a knife as well as smashes Johnny's guitarr before speeding back to NYC. And without his guitarr Johnny of course couldn't play. Months later Johnny spots Dee Dee thru a bar window, Johnny walks in and crashes a beer glass into Dee Dee's head, Dee Dee falls to the floor and then gets thrown out into the street by the bar staff. Message: The most believable story I've heard is that Johnny ended up doing acid, thinking it was something else and then since he hated drugs like that, ended up doing enough methadone to kill the entire french quarter in New Orleans to come down from it. The robbing probably happened after the assholes who sold John the stuff came by to see what was going on and he was passed out on the floor, so they helped themselves. I'm not exactly an expert on junk, in fact I've never actually seen it, but how could acid be mistaken for it? If I'm missing something here please fill me in. Return to Index |

I read his sister went to New Orleans to get further information and the cops said they lost the file. I also read in a Pam De Barres book that the autopsy showed he had leukimia and would have died soon anyway. Any truth to that, anyone? Deirdre blames Sylvain, who produced the album, as putting in the incorrect date on the album cover. So this now fits. Red Patent Leather was recorded on March 2, 1975 not on May 2, 1975. Chris R. I agree with you about the Little Hippodrome shows. Syl also mixed up his guitar while mixing down Johnny's. That Buttmonkey! Clinton Heylin lists the first Heartbreakers gig as taking place at Coventry's in Queens. I would think a mere six days as being a bit soon to be playing a debut gig. The back of Live At Max's LP says the Heartbreakers played "their first gig two weeks later." This would be the first week of May. I've always been under the impression that The Heartbreakers only played one gig as a three piece and that it was a bit of a bomb which is why they brought in Walter. Club 52 had temporarily stopped booking band for much of 1974 and had just begun booking bands again in the spring of 1975. It would seen a bit risky booking an unknown band such as the Heartbreakers even with they're primo pedigree. I don't question his date for the Dolls breakup but the first Heartbreakers I don't know.... I also have seen similar articles on The Heartbreakers as listing the Coventry gig as the first. Two with Billy Murcia, "Lipstick Killers-The Mercer Street Sessions" and Escape Studios,Kent (After The Storm, Antler singles etc..) And two sets of demos just prior to the two LP's. First album session demos were recorded after Jerry joined (Dec. 1973) but prior to New York Dolls first recording sessions (April 1973) These are what you have rightly called demos #3. I'm thinking they were recorded between January-March 1973 with March being the most likely. Demos #4 were recorded by Paul Nelson in Jan. 1974 where the olls recorded 14 songs. According to Heylin they recorded the following songs; Great Big Kiss, Stranded In The Jungle, Milk Man, Don't Start Me Talking, Don't Mess With Cupid, Showdown, Seven Day Weekend and Back In The USA. That's 8 numbers! Common sense would dictate that the rest of the songs would be group originals, so I'm thinking Babylon, Who Are The Mystery Girls, It's Too Late, Puss 'N' Boots, Chatterbox, and Human Being. I know what you're thinking, "hey those sound like the same songs on "Seven Day Weekend" (demos#3,) but Heylin states that the Dolls demoed "every song in their repertoire" for these demos, hence, the overlap. 22 songs were recorded (same as on Seven Day Weekend!) This of course means that there could be twelve other demo tunes out there. If anybody could find Paul Nelson, if he's still alive, he may be able to shed more light on this. This would be one of the best, most seamless editting jobs I've ever heard. B.) Why do the guitars (not mention all the instruments & vocals sound so radically different then any of the L.A.M.F. session recordings I've heard ie: Outtracks, Lost Mixes,Revisited etc.. While I'm no sound engineer, it sure doesn't sound like a studio recording to me. At least none I've heard from the album sessions! I'm not trying to give you a hard time, just trying to make it make sense to me. What are your sources? While I have no reason to doubt your "thunderness",there are many anomalies in a legendary figures domain. One example would be the superb Nina Antonia sleeve notes for the Lost '77 Mixes CD. Her chronology for recorded tracks differ from the back cover listing. While I tend to believe Ms. Antonia's exhausted @ 4:00 am version of events it does make you wonder don't it? The staff at the front office are most gracious, and will provide you with a map and directions, as the cemetery is quite large, and it is not easy to find your way around. I try and visit a couple times a year since it about a half hour from where I live. Athough Johnny's headstone has the name "NICOLETTI" etched on it, it does say "Johnny Thunders" in the lower left hand corner. Aerosmith of all people criticize Thunders and Nolan for their drug use. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Why couldnt it have been Steven Tyler six feet under? I think if you paid more attention you would've noticed that Joe Perry considered himself best friends with Johansen and was always a fan of the band. In fact, he played guitar on Johansen's first solo album...The Dolls WERE out of tune a lot, and the musicianship wasn't stellar. But I think anyone with brainwave activity knows that those things were secondary to the Dolls. They were just a very cool rock'n'roll band...Just because you dislike Aerosmith you shouldn't try to distort what their book says. It makes you look like an asshole. Return to Index |

It's posed in front of that "Gem Spa" place place pictured on the back of the first Doll's album, but the band is totally dressed down. They all have short hair. I was 16 years old, and living in South Florida (totally against my will - my father took an early retirement). All the kids in my high school were redneck assholes into Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Eagles. I was a HUGE David Bowie fan (ooh, he's queer, he's weird, how can you like him?) which made me vastly unpopular to begin with. I had the Dolls first album cover blown up into a poster and I had it hanging over my bed. My parents were ready to send me to a psychiatrist. They thought they were transvestites or drag queens or something. I thought they were all hot, ESPECIALLY JOHNNY. There were no guys like that in MY HIGH SCHOOL. Anyways, I saw the Dolls play a bar in Fort Lauderdale called The Flying Machine the day before my 16th birthday, December 21, 1974. They didn't draw a big crowd. They were an incredible band. I can't stand it when people say, oh, they couldn't play, they were terrible. They had an energy and an attitude that no other band in those days had. Believe me, I know. That's it for now.
